We are so thrilled to chat with Suellen Dainty, author of The Housekeeper. Here, Suellen shares a few facts about herself and gives us a sneak peak into her workspace!
The London Library in St James Square London. A perfect place to write and think.
A glass of water, and a pile of books. I like to have about three or four on the go at once. Right now, I’ve nearly finished Kate Moretti’s The Vanishing Year – a terrific thriller – and I’m half way through Tessa Hadley’s The Past, which I’m enjoying for the wondrous prose and have just started re-reading Doing Good Better by William Macaskill. I’m also reading The Ginger Tree by Oswald Wynd.
What I choose to read depends on how tired I am, or my mood at the end of the day.
It’s a question – what made you think of that?
1. A Spool of Blue Thread by Anne Tyler: line for line, one of the best writers around.
2. A Little Life by Hanya Nahagihara: her ability to dig below the surface, to make every moment and thought count makes this one of my modern classics.
3. Atonement by Ian McEwan: a perfect combination of plot and character.
4. The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt: Some thought that the plot was implausible, but I was swept away by her amazing story telling talent.
5. The Talented Mr Ripley by Patricia Highsmith: I was mesmerized from the first paragraph. Written in 1955, it hasn’t dated one bit.
