This week’s Inspired By is brought to you by Meg Akabas, whose new book 52 Weeks of Parenting Wisdom: Effective Strategies for Raising Happy, Responsible Kids, was just released released today! In keeping with the theme of her book, Meg chose for us five children’s books that inspire them to read at every age.
Tickle, Tickle, All Fall Down, Clap Hands and Say Goodnight by Helen Oxenbury
This series of four over-sized but slim board books feature lovely large illustrations of multicultural babies in motion alongside sing-song words. Each book provides a wonderful opportunity for sound effects and action to bring the book to life.
Ten Black Dots by Donald Crews
“What can you do with ten black dots?” Bold and colorful illustrations and rhyming text provide the answer. Crew’s grasp of child development is evident in all the details, which is why this book resonates so much with little ones, who will ask to have it read over and over again.
The First Strawberries by Joseph Bruchac
A quote from this book has been hanging in our kitchen for 20 years: “Respect and friendship are as sweet as the taste of ripe, red berries.” Even young children will be able to appreciate the lessons about the power of our words and the importance of forgiveness through this beautifully illustrated tale.
Did I Ever Tell You How Lucky You Are? by Dr. Seuss
Funny and entertaining, this lesser-known Dr. Seuss book carries an important message about appreciating what one has. The hilarious delivery and characteristically charming illustrations keep the lesson light for kids.
My Father’s Dragon by Ruth Stiles Gannett
The funny and magical story of a boy who runs away to an island to resecue a baby dragon never fails to delight. Enhanced by a map to follow and lovely illustrations, this classic is excellent both as a read-aloud book and for children who are making the transition to read-alone chapter books.
