A great article from GalleyCat shared some of the new, innovative ways to host a book club meeting – made possible by social media.

Here are the three they recommend, including some of our comments about each:

1. Skype

While it used to be that Skype was limited to one person conversations, the platform recently launched a group calling feature, which makes it simple to connect with multiple friends. This format is great because a lot of people already use Skype and have an account. You can call up to ten different people at once.

2. Google+ Hangouts

Google+ is the new craze around the Internet world, and it has made video chats easy with their Hangouts feature. It is set up as a multi-person chatroom and, according to Google, is the next best thing “until we perfect teleportation.” The downside to Google+ Hangouts is that it is currently invitation-only, which means a lot of people don’t have access.

3. Facebook Video Chat

Facebook just updated their chat feature to allow multiple person video chats, no doubt to keep up with the popular release of Google+ Hangouts. This feature will probably currently be the most accessible to the majority of users due to Facebook’s popularity. That, however, could change when Google+ lifts the invitation-only rule.

Which platform are you most likely to use for video chats and why? Do you think Google+ will be more popular than Facebook Video Chat?
