BookSparks: Give us a hint about your new book, The Gilded Wolves.
Roshani: There are gilded aspects to it. There are no wolves. Paris!
BS: Give us a hint about your writing routine.
Roshani: It involves a lot of pajamas. Just sitting in pajamas, not wearing them. Sometimes when I’m sad I like to put a blanket over my head and the laptop so that all the bad things stay in the blanket. Oh, and I eat coffee grinds… not used!
BS: Give us a hint about what’s on your nightstand.
Roshani: There’s always a half-empty bottle of La Croix which I never end up drinking because I’m afraid there’s going to be a spider in it and I’m going to swallow a spider and I’m going to be Spiderman and it’s going to be awful. And also my night guard which I haven’t decided on a name for him and a notebook actually. Sometimes you wake up in the middle of the night and you’re like, “A great idea, I need to write it down but usually, it’s just a bunch of hieroglyphs of whatever I was actually dreaming about. And that’s what’s on my nightstand.
BS: Give us a hint about what you’re currently reading.
Roshani: Right now I’m reading Demon Voices by Philip Pullman, it’s a collection of his nonfiction essays. Philip Pullman is one of my most favorite authors of all time and it’s really good for refilling the creative well.
BS: Give us a hint about a woman you look up to.
Roshani: Definitely all of the courtesans of 19th century Europe. I thought they were so fascinating, especially women like La Belle Otéro who had to navigate a world where she wasn’t welcome at all and to make herself famous from the sidelines and to capture people’s imaginations and to push back when everyone said she didn’t have a place there.
