We are so thrilled to dedicate this week’s edition of Inspired By to Amy Hatvany, author of one of our Winter Reads Picks Somewhere Out There. Here, Amy shares the five books that inspired her to be a writer.
Blubber by Judy Blume
I struggled with a feeling chubby compared to other girls during my adolescence, so I related to this story so much! I think it was the first time I really felt connected to a character in a book, like I could have BEEN that person.
Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier
A brooding, beautifully engaging suspense/mystery about a naive young girl who marries a rich, emotionally complicated man whose previous wife died under mysterious circumstances. I practically held my breath through every chapter the first time I read it, and I read it again once a year to remind myself how excellent pacing and delicate handling of red herrings can make a story exceptional.
Talk Before Sleep by Elizabeth Berg
A spare, but glittering gem of a novel that portrays how woman really are with each other, the language we speak – both aloud and silent. I was sucked into the story so completely, when it finished, I held it to my chest and had to close my eyes to bring myself back to the present moment. This was the book that made me believe that I could be a writer, too.
Good in Bed by Jennifer Weiner
Again, but now as an adult, I related to the main character, Cannie, so much, it was almost an eerie experience. Weiner crafted such a fun, relatable main character, I felt like I was reading a story about one of my best friends.
Nearer Than the Sky by T. Greenwood
A gorgeously rendered, emotional story about a mother with Munchausen’s by Proxy, and the two sisters who were raised by her. Greenwood’s prose is perfectly crafted, utilizing carefully chosen, poetic language that evokes deep emotion and detailed imagery – I couldn’t help but aspire to someday write something as affecting.
