Join BookSparks in Supporting Reteti Elephant Sanctuary + Female Elephant Keepers

As a company and community of readers and influencers, BookSparks is committed to using our influence and reach to make a difference. Every year we choose a charity and author to partner with and put our words to good use. This year, weā€™ve partnered with Nancy Richardson Fischer, author of When Elephants Fly, and the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary in Northern Kenya to help feed an elephant calf for a year and celebrate the work the female elephant keepers do there.

When Elephants Fly

BY NANCY RICHARDSON FISCHER

ā€œI encourage everyone to read this inspirational book and discuss mental illness and tolerance and the need to improve wildlife protection.ā€

Katie Rowe, Pritzker Genius Award nominee, Co-founder Reteti Elephant Sanctuary

When Elephants Fly is the story of Lily, a young woman with an overwhelming family history of mental health conditions who is living a careful life, terrified of triggering schizophrenia. But when she bonds with an orphaned elephant calf, Lily must decide whether to risk her sanity and freedom on a desperate road trip to save the calfā€™s life, perhaps finding her own version of freedom along the way

What This Means for Kenyan Women

One of the goals of the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary is to empower women. The sanctuary has the first indigenous women elephant keepers in all of Africa. This is changing the dynamic of these womenā€™s lives and communities by giving young women, who traditionally marry young and focus solely on children and home, new options for their futures.

What This Means for the Elephants

The Reteti Elephant Sanctuary has taken in 300 orphaned and abandoned elephant calves with an aim to release them back into the wild herds adjoining the Sanctuary. Each rescued elephant calf must drink a specially created formula every three hours, eight times per day to survive. Reteti is currently caring for 13 orphan elephant calves. Each calf costs $34/day to feed for an annual cost of $12,000 per calf. Your support will help us feed one of these infant elephants until they can join a herd.
