FOR OUR #SRC2014 BONUS WEEK, WE ARE PLEASED TO HOST A SHORT INTERVIEW WITH EMMA STRAUB!
What was the inspiration behind your book?
I wish I had an easy answer for this one! I’ve been writing about these characters for years and years, and so it’s hard to remember where the original seed came from. I think the inspiration was wanting to tell a story about how families really work–and how they’re very complicated and uneasy machines much of the time, even when padded by lots of love.
What is the strangest fan encounter that’s ever happened?
Oh, I’m still waiting! Though I do occasionally get “recognized” in public, which is always very funny to me. Being anonymous and behind the scenes is supposed to be a part of the writing life! But I’m in fact very chatty and goofy and so I love it and almost always end up hugging them.
Knowing what you know now, what publishing advice would you give yourself when you were first starting out?
It’s all luck, and timing, and perseverance.
What is your favorite summer beach read ever?
Ooh, maybe Donna Tartt’s The Secret History? That’s such a good one.
What are you most looking forward to this summer?
I have an advanced copy of the new Tana French. Mysteries are always good in the summer time, don’t you think?
